Now that I’ve had the time to playtest cards I’ve settled on swapping out one of the cards that was added to the deck because of the earlier bans, took the opportunity to add a spell from Bloomburrow that I have been considering since reviewing the set, and also replaced one of the utility lands. Hopefully that will be the last of the updates this year!
Thought Vessel > Mox Opal
Thought Vessel was added only in response to the September bans to make the deck legal while I was looking for a better alternative. After some playtesting I’ve settled on Mox Opal. As a zero mana spell it can provide a small mana boost in the early game, and metalcraft is readily active with nearly quarter of the deck being artifacts. I feel Mox Opal was the best choice from currently legal fast mana rocks because it can produce coloured mana, and it can be tutored in multiple ways.
Daretti, Scrap Savant > Dewdrop Cure
In the last few sets there have been multiple white reanimation cards that I have been considering for the deck. Remember the Fallen was often considered against those cards as they were either instant or sorceries, but then I’ve decided to compare them to Daretti. The planeswalker has been part of the deck nearly since its inception because he offers card advantage of sorts, and recursion for artifacts. However, I feel he has become obsolete through utilising more tutors in the deck. Dewdrop Cure caught my attention instantly when it was revealed in the Bloomburrow set. For relatively low mana value it can return up to three creatures straight to the battlefield and the deck has plenty of creatures this spell can target. Not to mention that aesthetically it fits well with my collection of young Avacyn alters.
High Market > Lazotep Quarry
I like the High Market, it has also been in the deck since its inception because it fits so well with the sacrifice subtheme. However, I cannot easily ignore a land that is not just strictly better, but vastly superior in function. Lazoted Quarry turns creatures into coloured mana, and can also eternalize a creature, while High Market only turns creatures into gaining 1 life. Theoretically I could run both in the deck but so far did not feel the need to have two lands with sacrifice outlets.
